Civil Rights Celebration

  • Credo 360 Pine San Francisco, CA USA (map)

Please join us for good company, hors d'oeuvres, and hosted wine and beer as we celebrate and honor civil rights leaders in California! Your ticket includes club membership dues for July 2018 - July 2019 and will support our activism throughout the year.

We are celebrating the 28th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the 53rd Anniversaries of Medicare and Medicaid! The ADA, Medicare and Medicaid have been the most significant pieces of legislation for our communities.

At the event, we will present the 5th annual August J.P. Longo Award for Leadership. Honoring the founder of the FDR Dems, the August J.P. Longo award recognizes an outstanding leader or organization that has demonstrated a commitment to advancing the causes of seniors and people with disabilities. Please join us this year, as we honor State Treasurer John Chiang and The California Alliance for Retired Americans (CARA)!

John Chiang currently serves as California State Treasurer. In this role he leads the implementation, launch and oversight of the California Achieving a Better Life Experience “Cal ABLE” program, and as a member of the Cal ABLE Advisory Council. Similar to 529 college savings accounts, Cal ABLE accounts people with disabilities and/or their family to save money tax free. Most significantly, funds saved in Cal ABLE accounts are exempt from the low asset restrictions set by programs such as social security, that many people with disabilities depend on.

CARA was formed in 2003 to build a statewide network of hundreds of organizations and individuals to win social and economic justice, full civil rights and a better and more secure future for California’s nearly 1,000,000 older adults. CARA is the state affiliate of the 4.3 million member National Alliance for Retired Americans.
